Vaccinations for Your Puppy

Vaccinations play a critical role in your puppy’s health during the first four months of its life.

Core Vaccines Are:

  • A series of vaccines that vaccinate against common viruses that cause illness and in some cases lead to death

  • Recommended for all dogs regardless of lifestyle

  • Series of 3 vaccines given at 8, 12, and 16 weeks of age, then annually

Leptospirosis

  • Protects against leptospirosis disease in dogs. It primarily affects the liver or kidneys.

  • Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira bacteria an commonly thrives in water.

  • Series of 2 vaccines given at 12, and 16 weeks of age, then annually.

Rabies

  • Typically administered at 16 weeks

  • Protects against the rabies virus

Kennel Cough (Bordetella)

  • Affects the respiratory system

  • Highly contagious between dogs

  • Usually self-limiting but in some cases can lead to secondary pneumonia

  • We carry the vaccine that protects against the most common virus

Lymes

  • Are caused by a type of bacteria known as Borellia burgdorferi and can be transmitted from the tick to dogs

  • A tick must be attached for at least 24 hours before it can transmit the organism that causes the disease

  • This vaccine needs to be boosted 3-6 weeks after the first vaccination is administered and is then required on an annual basis

  • Recommended for those pets who are exposed to ticks and who’ owners aren’t able to remove the tick with 24 hours

  • The vaccine helps prevent against Lyme disease, however, it does not prevent ticks
